And for those who are wondering whether Mr Wu know's what he is talking about...
"Come on! Our children already know these 5 pairs of numbers. What are you talking about? What is there to learn from this?"
You see, it is one thing to know, but another to have it mastered.. and have it at your fingertips.
Suggested activity for Stage 1 - My Favourite Number
In class we have this activity called "My Favourite Number". The kids love it.
Firstly, I tell the class that my favourite number is 10 and I need their help to make my favourite number happen.
Next, I will be giving them random single digit numbers, and the students shall correspond with the correct number that makes up 10.
If I say "6!" The children have to indicate with their fingers the answer, which is 4. So they should hold up their hands and show me 4 fingers.
The rules are simple:
They must remain in their seats (no standing up, jumping to get attention, etc)
Nobody makes any sound
Hands on the table before every answer (to ensure fair play and also adds to the suspense ;) )
Show the answer with your fingers and raise your hands high up!
If you want to change your answer, your hands go all the way down to the table before coming up again.
I usually give points to the fastest 1 or 2 students with the correct answers.
At the end, the students with the most points gets a reward.
What this game does is it forces students to be faster than each other at recalling the pairs of number that make up 10.
The next question: "When do we know if our children has had enough practice? When are they ready for the next stage?"
If your children are able to answer you instantly within a snap of the fingers. They are ready for stage 2!
the best games are the ones that can be played anywhere! waiting for a parking lot with the children in the car? waiting for bus or mrt to arrive? waiting for food to come while eating out? no problem!
This game is easy to play, fast and does not require any tools. You can do this literally anywhere and anytime, even if you only have a few minutes to spare. Give it a try and let me know how it went for you!
